FireSmart 101

More so than ever before, Canadians are feeling the direct and indirect impacts of wildfire. FireSmart Canada has developed a free one-hour course for those getting started with FireSmart. This is the recommended first step for all training paths.

FireSmart Professional
The FireSmart Ambassador course is the required foundation for all professional training paths. Once complete, you can pursue either or both of the specializations below — these are independent tracks, not sequential steps. Choose the one that matches your role and goals.

FireSmart Ambassador
~3 hours · 4 modules · Online · Open to anyone
Prerequisite: FireSmart 101 · Required for: NRP Specialist & HIZ Specialist
FireSmart Ambassadors serve as frontline representatives, knowledgeable about FireSmart within the local community. As promoters of FireSmart guidelines, programming, and concepts, they play a foundational role in building awareness and encouraging action. Ambassadors do not conduct technical assessments.
The goal is to have as many FireSmart Ambassadors in communities as possible — the more educated community residents and leaders are, the more resilient to wildfire they will become.

NRP Specialist
For neighbourhood leaders and coordinators
The NRP Specialist is responsible for coordinating and supporting the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program within their local area. This includes guiding residents and neighbourhoods through the NRP process, from forming committees to completing wildfire hazard assessments and holding FireSmart events.
Format: Online course + live workshop
Prerequisite: FireSmart Ambassador training
Note: Specific eligibility criteria must be met. Upon successful completion, an active commitment to fulfilling the role is expected.

HIZ Specialist
For fire department members (12+ months of service)
Advanced FireSmart Home Assessment Program
Each unique property calls for a unique plan towards wildfire risk reduction. Formally trained professionals review individual properties alongside their residents. Following this assessment, residents receive comprehensive reports outlining specific actions and upgrades required to increase their resilience to wildfire.
Prerequisite: FireSmart Ambassador training (completed within the last 6 months)
Requirement: Current member of a fire department or agency (for at least 12 months)
Program: Advanced FireSmart Home Assessment

These courses are designed for organizations and professionals working alongside communities to reduce wildfire risk. FireSmart 101 is a recommended starting point for all audiences in this path.
Industry Training
Wildfire Preparedness for Insurance Professionals
Free · ~2 hours · 6 modules · Online, self-paced · No prerequisites required
This standalone course is designed specifically for insurance brokers, agents, advisors, and company staff.
As wildfire risk continues to grow across Canada, insurance clients are increasingly seeking guidance on how to protect their families and properties. This course equips insurance professionals with the knowledge and resources needed to confidently advise clients on wildfire risk reduction and emergency preparedness.
Upon completion, participants will be able to communicate effectively with clients about how wildfires ignite and spread, recommend practical steps to reduce risk at the property level, and connect clients with free FireSmart resources and available funding programs.

Graduates receive a shareable resources package with key takeaways from each module, plus a toolkit of FireSmart Canada booklets, assessment tools, checklists, videos, and case studies to share with clients. Insurance brokers in BC, AB, SK, MB, and ON are eligible for 2 hours of CE credits through their provincial broker association.
